Wild Flower lawns

Dare to be different and throw caution to the wind – along with some seeds – this summer.

Many of us have large lawns which require constant mowing during the warmer months.

I recently bought a property with a big paddock, which will need some sheep or a good mow. Instead of that, I’m going to plant it out as a wildflower meadow. You can do this too – even a small section of your lawn would look lovely.

Good wildflowers to grow in New Zealand are California poppies, lupin, viola, candytuft, nemophila, Virginia stock, marigold, soapwort and cornflower.

All you need to do is get rid of any weeds, then gently till the soil. Mix your seeds with sand and spread this by hand across your chosen area.

You will need to keep the seeds well watered until they germinate, but once the flowers are established they do very well in dry conditions. Make sure you mow in autumn to spread more seed for next year’s crop.

Once your wildflower lawn or meadow is in full bloom, you could scatter more seed in the second season, but it should naturalise and produce wonderful flowers for many more seasons.
