Prince Harry officially retires from the British Army

The royal announced he would be leaving the Army in March this year to focus on new projects, including conservation work in southern Africa and assisting injured servicemen and women.

During his time in the military Prince Harry was involved in two tours in Afghanistan, qualified as an Apache Aircraft Commander and established the Invictus Games. Earlier this year, he also completed an attachment with the Australian Defence Force.

“The Prince has had a fulfilling military career and considers it a huge honour to have served his country in the Armed Forces,” a statement from Kensington Palace read.

When Prince Harry first announced his decision to retire from the Army, General Sir Nicholas Carter, Chief of the General Staff, said he had “achieved much in his ten years as a soldier”.

“He has been at the forefront throughout his service,” he said in a statement released at the time.

So what’s next for the Prince? According to the official statement from the Palace, he will be be working closely with front-line conservation experts during his time in Africa, living in the same accommodation and learning about wildlife protection from the experts.

“After this period, Prince Harry will be one of the best-informed ambassadors for the conservation community on what is really happening on the ground in Africa,” said the Zoological Society of London’s Jonathan Baillie.

“His experience will be of great value.”
