The X Factor blog: week 5

Like cookies and milk, wine and cheese and Salt-n-Pepa, Twitter and The X Factor New Zealand are a match seemingly made in heaven.

There’s fashion commentary, although it’s mostly directed at Daniel’s pants – there’s an actual account called “Daniel Bedingfield’s Pants,” as well as a “Daniel Bedingfield Tartan Appreciation Society” – bribes from the country’s top comedians, and, of course, everyone’s opinions on the performances and who gets sent home.

There’s the obvious vitriol, but there are also some clever chickens on Twitter who really do enhance the viewing experience, and they came out in force last night when Taye Williams was sent home over rappers L.O.V.E.

Never, in the history of The X Factor New Zealand (yes, I realise there’s been only two live episodes. Going for dramatic effect here) has there been a more controversial decision. L.O.V.E. forgot their words. They FORGOT their WORDS.

Placed in the bottom two after a pitchy and some would say awkward performance of OMC’s How Bizarre mixed with Salt-n-Pepa’s Push It, the girls from Hamilton had a nightmare, stopping halfway through their song when they realised they’d blanked the words to Savage’s Swing. (In their defence, it’s not exactly a classic, but still.)

Taye also landed in the bottom two for his performance of Kimbra’s Settle Down, and for his last chance song gave a sterling rendition of Cee Lo Green’s Forget You. He remembered what he was supposed to sing, so naturally, we all thought the decision was a dead cert.

But, for some reason known only to himself and his pants, Daniel chose to save L.O.V.E. over Taye, which sent the result back to deadlock, and Taye was sent home, as he got the least public votes. Stan, sweet, lovable Stan, could be seen mouthing obscenities at Daniel as he rose to join Taye on the stage, his amazement matched only by the Twitter community.

“This is worse than the time Anchor changed their milk bottles!” wrote comedian Guy Williams, which was swiftly followed by, “This is the last time I trust the people of NZ to vote for anything. Burn parliament!”

“Should’ve been like The Hunger Games with Fletcher volunteering to go in Taye’s place,” said The Crowd Goes Wild’s James McOnie. “Well below average calls from NZ and @DanielBedingfld on #xfactornz,” added Brooke Howard Smith. “I’m not angry, just VERY disappointed.”

And a whole lot more that are not suitable for re-publication on a family-friendly website.

Tell us how you really feel, New Zealand. But, as Hayley Holt rightly pointed out, it was in the end New Zealand’s decision. Taye did receive the lowest number of votes, and he was eliminated.

Daniel was quick to go on the offensive, tweeting after the show, “voting people off with a thumbs up or down is pretty damn hardcore. A lot of people feeling personally attacked by my decision tonight.”

Stan also vented his feelings on Twitter, posting a message that read, “I more than anyone am disappointed in last night’s decision with Taye leaving… Even though Daniel took it to deadlock it is still up to you to vote.”
